At first, they created the Educational Foundation for the Apparel Industries to promote education for the industry. The Foundation then obtained a charter from the New York State Board of Regents to establish a “fashion institute of technology and design.” The institute opened in 1944 with 100 students, and was located on the top two floors of the High School of Needle Trades.

Each year, hundreds of students come to the FIT Counseling Center for assistance with personal and academic concerns. There is no problem that is too silly. In fact, we encourage students to contact us when concerns are beginning to emerge, as problems left untreated or unresolved can become much larger and affect your personal and academic well-being.
Our services are free to all registered, degree-seeking students and are private and confidential. Faculty, staff, parents and student groups are also invited to use the Counseling Center's consultation services and educational resources.
Four on-campus residence halls house approximately 1,100 new/entering students on 27th Street and 1,100 current/returning students at 31st Street's Kaufman Hall. Kaufman Hall also serves as home to our summer housing program for visiting interns.
FIT's Library supports the academic and research needs of the FIT community. A well-selected collection of more than 175,000 volumes of print materials (and over 300,000 combined print, non-print, and electronic) supports the instructional programs in art and design, business and technology, liberal arts and our Graduate School.
The Health Services provides general medical and gynecological care, and carries a limited supply of medications free of charge to full-time students. Comprehensive lab tests needed for diagnostic purposes are performed on site by Quest and Labcorp. Any time you are ill, or have questions concerning your health, we are here to help you.

With four residence halls, two fitness centers, an intercollegiate athletics program, more than 60 clubs, and hundreds of on-campus activities, you'll find a wide range of resources for study, exploration, and fun. You'll gain new perspectives and opportunities you never imagined, and be immersed in a vibrant urban experience as rich as you want it to be.
FIT has intercollegiate teams in tennis, cross-country, half-marathon, track and field, dance, swimming, women's volleyball, women's soccer, and table tennis. Participation in athletics provides training for life and FIT student athletes strive toward excellence within the classroom and within intercollegiate competition. FIT teams compete against other schools in Region XV of the National Junior College Athletic Association.

Great experience with the most amazing professors eager to solve problems and give knowledge from their lives in campus or outside the campus. A great learning environment with a lot of people eager to create. Careful about sustainability and slow fashion.
