Founded in a one room shanty, near Butler Chapel AME Zion Church, thirty adults represented the first class - Dr. Booker T. Washington the first teacher. The founding date was July 4, 1881, authorized by House Bill 165.
The academic programs are organized into five colleges and three schools: the College of Agriculture, Environment and Nutrition Sciences; the College of Arts and Sciences; the Andrew F. Brimmer College of Business and Information Science; the College of Engineering; the College of Veterinary Medicine; the Robert R. Taylor School of Architecture and Construction Science; the School of Education; and the School of Nursing and Allied Health. The curricula for these colleges and schools currently offer over 50 degrees including 39 Bachelor's, 13 Master's, 2 Doctor's of Philosophy: one in Materials Science and Engineering, and one in Integrative BioSciences, and the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.
Since its creation in 1996, the Office of Research has more than doubled its annual funding for research and other sponsored programs. Tuskegee University’s annual funding for Research and other Sponsored Programs currently ranges from $40 to $45 million. Credit for this enormous success goes to faculty members and staff, who continue to search for resources and write winning proposals. The staff members in the Division of Research and Sponsored Programs and various departments of Business and Fiscal Affairs are also to be commended for their enthusiastic support of the researchers in the grantsmanship process.
The primary mission of Tuskegee University’s Career Development and Placement Services is to facilitate the professional and personal aspirations of students for internship, cooperative education, full-time employment or admission to graduate/professional schools.
It is the responsible campus unit for teaching students self assessment and career planning skills. It provides students on-the-job learning experiences, limited financial assistance for University education and assistance in securing full-time career employment.

The Mission of Housing and Residence Life is to provide educational living and dining environments that promotes a successful transition for our new students. Additional housing is provided for continuing students in apartments. We strive to create a safe wholesome living and learning environment that is conducive to the overall development of our students that aids in their academic success, leadership development, positive decision making and responsible citizenship. Services are provided to our students in a friendly, courteous and efficient manner which helps to promote academic success.
The fundamental purpose of the Tuskegee University Library System is to acquire, organize, and disseminate information, which prepares the student to function responsibly as an individual within society. The Tuskegee University Library System consists of the Ford Motor Company Library/Learning Resource Center, the Architecture Library, the Engineering Library and the Veterinary Medical Library.
The Office of Information Technology is the primary information-technology provider on the campus of Tuskegee University. Our mission is to provide and promote information-technology services that support the mission of the University and provide quality customer service to the university community and guests.
The Student Health Center provides a variety of health care services for all enrolled students. Our team continues to be at the forefront of issues that impact the health and wellness of our students, including helping students understand health equity and racial justice, and managing sniffles, allergies, anxiety, nutrition, immunizations, and general health services.
Physical facilities include more than 5,000 acres of forestry and a campus on which sits more than 100 major buildings and structures. Total land, forestry and facilities are valued in excess of $500 million.
The mission of intercollegiate athletics at Tuskegee is to provide athletic programs that contribute in an effective and meaningful manner to the achievement of the broader goals of the University. The Athletic programs should enhance the total educational experience of students, promote the retention and matriculation of students, advance the reputation of Tuskegee, and cultivate loyalty and support of students, alumni and the community at large.
The University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).
The classes were large, but the professors made up for it with their availability through office hours and phone calls. The school also offered free on-campus tutorial services where you could meet up with other students to learn difficult content.
