History

Oxford Brookes University was founded in 1865 as an art school and was taken over and renamed Oxford City Technical School in 1891. John Henry Brookes became Vice-Principal in 1928 and finally in 1992 it was named Oxford Brookes University. Today, Oxford Brookes University is a thriving community of staff and students, committed to helping our students achieve their potential.

Education

Teaching at Oxford Brookes has an outstanding reputation with 11 faculty members having been awarded the National Teaching Fellowships, the most prestigious award in UK higher education teaching. Our National Teaching Fellows work across a range of subjects from geography and architecture to business and education. 

Departments across the University have live projects and field trips designed to give you the opportunity to take your learning beyond the classroom, put your subject into context in the real world, and build the skills and experience that employers are looking for.

Research

Oxford Brookes University is 1st in the UK for research (Times Higher Education (THE) Young University Rankings 2019) and 94% of our research at Oxford Brookes is internationally recognised (Research Excellence Framework 2014). 

We are committed to enhancing the impact of our research in its broadest terms, and widen dissemination of their research for the benefit of our communities, whether local, regional or global, including our staff and students. Students are able to exchange ideas with teachers who work collaboratively to push their subject area forward. 

We now have a modern 100-seat teaching lab, student orientated spaces, academic offices, and further teaching and research areas.

Employers want graduates with proven skills they can take into the workplace. So Oxford Brookes courses don’t just give you a degree - they give you work placements, professional knowledge, links into industry, integrated careers guidance and so much more to build your employability.

95% of our students are employed and/or in further study within 6 months of leaving Oxford Brookes (HESA 2018).

We work closely with professionals to design courses focused on a career in a specific sector from architecture and engineering to nursing and education.

Student services

At Oxford Brookes we are proud of our student support services. From visa advice to study support and careers guidance, we've got you covered.

  • Each student also gets a personal academic adviser to guide you throughout your studies and provide comprehensive academic support.
  • Our International Student Advice Team (ISAT) offer help with everything from visas to work options for international students.
  • Upgrade is the University's confidential study advice service for anyone who wants advice on academic English, statistics, maths and study skills.
  • Wellbeing helps you to make the most of your time here at Oxford Brookes. They offer counselling, disability and dyslexia services and run the Multifaith Chaplaincy.

Housing services

You are guaranteed a place in one of our halls as long as you make us your firm choice and apply by the deadline. All our halls are on a BROOKESbus route, connecting Headington, Harcourt Hill and Wheatley campuses with the rest of the city. You can choose between study rooms with ensuite or shared bathrooms and studio flats, located on both the campus and in the city centre. 

Library services

Our Headington Library, spanning six floors with tonnes of study space, is open 24/7 during semester time. Every subject we teach has its own librarian and specialist webpage offering you support with your studies. With 400,000 paper-based journals and books and over 25,000 online resources, you’ll always be able to find what you need.

ICT services

The IT Service Desk provide support for all staff and students across the University. Support is always available, should you need some help with anything IT-related, you can wander into an IT Service Desk Point (on any campus) or use our web portal.

Oxford Brookes has over 1,000 open-access PCs for students to use across the university. 

Medical services

Oxford has world-leading medical facilities and at Oxford Brookes we offer wellbeing services which are confidential to staff and students. The team respond to enquiries from current and prospective students. 

The Medical Centre on campus offers a confidential and comprehensive medical service. We deliver a personal, efficient and friendly service to our patients.

Student Life

Campus life

  • Oxford Brookes is based in and around the historic city of Oxford, where our three largest campuses are located - Harcourt Hill Campus, Wheatley Campus, Headington Campus.
  • Headington is the largest of the three campuses, with new buildings including the award-winning John Henry Brookes Building, Sinclair laboratories and a new Business School to help you pursue excellence in your studies.
  • Each of the Oxford campuses have accommodation, sports facilities, a library, computer rooms and a shop. When you need a bite to eat, there are cafes, and restaurants serving breakfast, lunch and evening meals.
  • Over a ten-year period, Oxford Brookes is investing £220m in its estate.

Sports facilities

  • We provide our students with lots of fun and affordable ways to get involved with sport and exercise, from absolute beginners to elite athletes.
  • Brookes Sport offers excellent gyms, Oxfordshire’s premier climbing wall, a swimming pool, boathouse, courts, pitches and much more. 
  • Start a new sport or carry on with one you love with our 40+ clubs, welcoming everyone from beginners to seasoned pros. Expand your social circle and keep fit as a member of a team.
  • Oxford Brookes has a great history of sporting achievement.  In 2017, we became the number one rowing university in the UK and we compete in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Premier and Midlands conferences in 33 sports.

Student clubs

  • Brookes Union is run by students for students and is here to represent your views and help you enjoy your time at Oxford Brookes. With events as diverse as film shows, debates, dinners, speakers, nights, seminars, trips away and balls, there is something for everyone.
  • There is a huge range of different groups and societies you can join - from languages and politics to baking and dance and everything in between. If you can’t find the society for you, Brookes Union will support you in starting your own!
  • You can become a Brookes Union Academic Rep and act as the student voice on behalf of your course or department to improve your academic experience.
