About

History

Virginia State University was founded on March 6, 1882, when the legislature passed a bill to charter the Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institute. The bill was sponsored by Delegate Alfred W. Harris, a Black attorney whose offices were in Petersburg, but lived in and represented Dinwiddie County in the General Assembly.

Research

The university has been successful in providing research opportunities for students through funded research projects. The research activities of the University are sponsored by, among others, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Defense Department, U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Department of Education, National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Agency for International Development as well as the State of Virginia, university linkages, and private industry.

Housing services

To provide a conducive living learning environment that supports the academic mission of the university and to educate and engage students through intentional programming and developmental interactions to help develop them into independent adults, global citizens and strong contributing community members.

Medical services

We focus on promotion of good health through counseling, education, and prevention of illness. We welcome your ideas and suggestions. The Student Health Center provides medical care to all VSU students and makes referrals for medical cases beyond its capacity. Upon a visit to the facility, a valid VSU Identification Card must be presented before services are rendered.

Student Life

Campus life

The 236-acre campus is located in Virginia’s historic Chesterfield County, on a bluff overlooking the Appomattox River.

On-campus facilities include a fully wired, 280,000-volume library, a new science and engineering center, a computer technology center and a campus radio station. VSU also owns and operates a 416-acre farm and agricultural research center.

Sports facilities

Intramural sports at VSU are open to all students, males and females, as well as faculty and staff members. There are no tryouts so everyone can play the sports they choose.

Intramurals are a great way to get or stay fit and active, to participate in a team environment, and to have fun.

Student clubs

Student organizations play an important role in campus life at Virginia State University. Throughout the year, they sponsor a variety of extra and co-curricular activities for the campus community as well as participate in service projects on and off campus.

Accreditation

Virginia State University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award baccalaureate, masters and doctorate degrees.
