About

History

The University of Exeter has been dedicated to discovery and changing lives through education since 1851 when the Exeter Schools of Art and Science were founded. In 1922 we became the University College of the South West, receiving our Charter in 1955, achieving full university status and becoming the University of Exeter.

Research

Our research is at the heart of what we do and is making a difference across the world. We unite expertise from across our academic disciplines, breaking down barriers to create innovative solutions to complex, global challenges.

Recent breakthroughs to come out of the University of Exeter’s research include using drone surveys and computer modelling to plot extreme arctic erosion, improving diagnosis and treatment for cancer and diabetes (for which we were awarded a prestigious Queen’s Anniversary Prize) and developing a 7-point plan to battle the climate emergency via economic reform.

Student Life

Campus life

The Streatham Campus, the University’s largest site in Exeter, is built around a country estate overlooking the city and is readily acknowledged as one of the most beautiful in the country.
St Luke's Campus is located on the east side of the city centre, just over a mile from Streatham Campus across the city to the north-west.
The Penryn Campus is set in 100 acres of countryside, close to the waterside town of Falmouth, and boasts beautiful views over the Fal estuary. It offers peace and tranquillity as well as a lively student community with a vibrant mixture of students from science, engineering, humanities and arts backgrounds.

Sports facilities

The University of Exeter is home to some of the best sports facilities in the South West. We are dedicated to providing an excellent sporting experience to players at all levels from across the community. Over the last decade we have invested in excess of £20million in the creation of the highest quality training environments and resources for the development, coaching and playing of sport.

Student clubs

In Exeter, thousands of students sign up to over 180 different Guild-affiliated societies. These societies cover a wide range of activities enabling our students to get fully involved with university life. Societies range from the conventional (such as English Soc, Ski Club, Photosoc and Jazz Orchestra), to the more esoteric (such as the Chocolate Society and Hide and Seek Society). You can get involved with the running of any of these and if there’s a society you want that we don’t have, we’ll help you set it up.

my turn up in life!
Anonymous rated 5 out of 5 stars

The University of Exeter has given me several opportunities to grow in terms of culture, relationships with people, independence, and as an individual. I consider myself a completely different person than when I started. I am a much more mature person, with a lot of desire to discover new things, and to be more and more open to the world.
