History
Founded in 1866, the American University of Beirut is a teaching-centered research university based on the American liberal arts model of higher education. AUB has over 9,000 students and over 1,200 instructional faculty members. The University encourages freedom of thought and expression and seeks to graduate men and women committed to creative and critical thinking.
Education
AUB currently offers more than 130 programs leading to the bachelor's, master's, MD, and PhD degrees. The University became coeducational in 1922; its student body is 50 percent male and 50 percent female. The language of instruction is English (except for courses in the Arabic Department and other language courses).

The Career and Placement Services, which is part of the Student Affairs Office, provides guidance and resources to students and AUB graduates for their life-long career development by facilitating their exploration of career options and development of effective career life planning skills. Library services
The University Libraries include the central Jafet Memorial Library and two branch libraries: the Engineering and Architecture Library and the Science and Agriculture Library with its annex the Advancing Research Enabling Communities Center (AREC) Library. The Saab Memorial Medical Library (SML) is one of the best medical libraries in the Middle East.

Campus life
Located in Ras Beirut, AUB's main campus has a total of 64 buildings. The 60.9 acre (246,459 square meter) campus overlooking the Mediterranean Sea includes athletic fields, private beach, bird sanctuary, and a repository of native and non-native trees and shrubs.
The American University of Beirut (AUB) operates under a charter granted by the Education Department of the State of New York in 1863, which registers the Universitys degree programs. AUB degrees are also recognized by the Lebanese government through the equivalence committees of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education.
