History
Cardiff Metropolitan University traces its history back to 1865 when the School of Art first opened in the Old Free Library in Cardiff. Since it has developed into a university, it has remained rooted in Wales while providing practice-focused and professionally oriented education to students from around the globe.
Education
There’s an extensive range of taught courses available at Cardiff Met, which include MA and MSc qualifications. Courses can be found across all five of Cardiff Met’s schools in art and design, business and management, education and public services, sport and health sciences, technologies and engineering and include subjects such as:

- Health Psychology (MSc)
- International Hospitality & Tourism Management (MA)
- Data Science (MSc)
There are also options to study a PGCE in Primary or Secondary education.

Cardiff Met has an established reputation for excellence in applied research. Supported by academic experts and advanced scholarships, its research is directly applied into industry and community.
Cardiff Met offers different routes into postgraduate research study, with full and part time options available.Students can also choose to study for a Professional Doctorate. These wide range of courses combine taught methods with research interests from across the university.

World University Rankings is a vital resource that provides the definitive list of the world's best universities. They look at how often they're producing new ideas, what their reputation is around the world, and how much they're contributing to science and academic fields. After calculating and comparing these criteria, THE ranks the universities accordingly.
Student services
Cardiff Met’s Students’ Union (SU) is run by two executive officers (President and Vice President) and has a board of trustees, along with representatives from each school.
Cardiff Met SU helps both postgraduate and undergraduate students enjoy activities including sports, societies, workshops, volunteering and more and provides support with access to further help and advice to make the student experience as enjoyable and fulfilling as possible.
Housing services
Cardiff Metropolitan University aims to provide a safe and secure environment for students living on campus, with friendly Halls staff available to provide support and help throughout your stay.
The University currently has nearly 1,000 study bedrooms located at the Cyncoed and Plas Gwyn campuses. All the bedrooms are mixed gender and inclusive of all utility bills, including electric, gas, water, internet, insurance, etc.
In addition, the University also allocates just over 1,200 private en-suite halls to students through nomination agreements with private halls located near to the campuses.
Library services
The Learning Centres feature professional support and guidance, well-equipped study areas and access to a wide range of learning resources and IT facilities.
The Learning Centres are open to all 7 days a week during term time and have 24hr accessible spaces available.
ICT services
The University supports all aspects of using IT at Cardiff Met. Their dedicated team are available to support with computer problems, wi-fi issues and give advice on purchasing IT hardware and software.
For any IT query, you can call or email the team. Alternatively, you can stop by the technology support desks in the Learning Centres on campus.
Medical services
Whether you are living in Cardiff Met Campus halls/Private halls or a house in the surrounding area, you will need to register with a GP/Dentist and Optician as soon as you arrive or indeed beforehand if you know your address.

Campus life
Llandaff Campus is the home of the Cardiff School of Sport & Health Sciences (Llandaff), Cardiff School of Management, Cardiff School of Technologies and the Cardiff School of Art & Design.
The campus offers excellent sporting facilities, student union, on-site shop, coffee bars, including Costa and Starbucks, and refectory. The campus is located approximately two miles from the city centre, surrounded by numerous parks, playing fields and the historic village of Llandaff. This campus is also conveniently located near the Plas Gwyn residential campus.
Cyncoed is home to the Cardiff School of Education & Social Policy and the Cardiff School of Sport & Health Sciences (Cyncoed).
Sports facilities
Sport is part of the very DNA at Cardiff Met, where throughout their history they have supported and developed a wide range of Olympic and International level athletes.
Cardiff Met Sport offers excellent sports facilities and an extensive range of activities to cater for everyone from elite athletes to students, staff and the wider community.

Student clubs
Students at Cardiff Met have over 50 societies to choose from. A range of interests and hobbies are currently covered by these multiple societies, including sports, arts and crafts, faith and academic studies. There’s no limit on the number of societies that can be joined.
The university also offers a wide variety of sporting clubs, many of which compete highly in European, national and local league competitions. This includes the UEFA Champions League, Europa League, Welsh Premier Leagues, WBBL, and the WRU Championship.
Students are also encouraged to set up their own societies. Cardiff Met offers up to GBP 100, as well as advice and use of facilities, to students who want to create a new society.
Results from the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 showed Cardiff Met produced world-leading research across its entire submission, with nearly two thirds of research outputs found to be Internationally Excellent or World Leading. 70% of our overall submission was rated Internationally Excellent or World Leading. Almost 80% of the research impact was rated either Internationally Excellent or World Leading.
