Overview

That ‘film’ might encompass the entire breadth of formal media production from a short film, documentary, commercial, TV show or web series to a full-length feature film. Regardless of form, the graduate will know how to go about the writing, planning, financing, execution, and distribution of that cultural product.

Each student will gain this breadth of understanding while also having the opportunity to specialize in a subject they feel the strongest affinity towards, whether that is writing, directing, cinematography, sound, producing, editing or production design. The aim is to provide a deep understanding of and facility with a specific skill-set that will become the impetus for their career in the film and video industry.

Our Vision

Situated within the Theatre and Dance department, the Theatre - Film Production program from Texas State University is unique in that we are able to draw on a plethora of adjacent skill-sets in the theatre world. This commingling of disciplines broadens our student’s understanding of the shared principles that guide performance, technical production and team management in both Theatre and Film.

Our BFA Acting students will perform in your short films. Our cinematography students will utilize the latest technology in lighting design for the stage. The extensive costume and props archive will be available to our Production Design students. The opportunity to create further synergies between these disciplines is without limit.

Another unique advantage to our program is that the student filmmaker will have the opportunity to make a film in their first year in the program and will be offered that opportunity again several times throughout their studies. One of our dictums at the Texas State program is that you have to ‘make it happen’. You will make films at Texas State.

The Core Curriculum is designed to offer each student filmmaker a full insight into every element of the filmmaking process but will emphasize at every stage, transferable skills that will prepare them for any productive or creative enterprise: project management, team building, leadership, writing, reading, and storytelling. We stress values such as hard work, perseverance, organization, diversity, and multiplicity. Make it happen.

You must apply for admission online using through ApplyTexas or Coalition for College (we will not accept mail-in forms).
The Office of Undergraduate Admissions charges a nonrefundable application fee of $90.
You must submit full transcripts (records of ALL courses taken and marks earned for each semester of both secondary school and college), as well as graduation or school-leaving exam results.
Have the testing service send your scores directly to Texas State University. English proficiency tests will need to be mailed by the testing service.
