Loughborough University dates from 1996, but its roots as a technical institute date back to 1909. Over the years, Loughborough has been awarded an outstanding seven Queen’s Anniversary Prizes to recognise the contribution of our research, a record only surpassed by the University of Oxford.
The University is divided into 17 schools and departments based on our Loughborough campus, and five institutes and one academy on our London campus. We offer a diverse range of programmes from traditional academic subject areas including the humanities and sciences, through to more vocational programmes in diplomacy, design, digital technology, and business. In addition to our internationally recognised expertise in sports-based subjects, Loughborough also ranks highly for the Arts, and has a wide-range of Engineering disciplines.
Loughborough University’s research environment generates globally important work in partnership with business, public and voluntary organisations, and our inclusive approach ensures research is embedded in all that we do. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF), Loughborough University was ranked 9th in England for research intensity. Around 65% of the research conducted by Loughborough’s staff was judged to be ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ compared with a national average of 43%.
