The institution currently known as the University of Dubuque was founded by the Rev. Adrian Van Vliet, who was pastor of the German Presbyterian Church, now known as the First Presbyterian Church of Dubuque, in 1852 to train ministers to serve the influx of immigrants to the upper midwest.
In light of its Mission, the University will continually re-examine and adjust the core curriculum to achieve an artful and purposeful blend of the arts, sciences, humanities, and theology. Where appropriate, these disciplines will be infused within the professional programs offered. A value-laden education which focuses on justice, ethics, and responsible stewardship within a globally diverse community will be stressed.

The mission of the University of Dubuque Student Health Services is to promote the health and wellness of the University Community, to enhance student retention, and to support academic and personal success.

The Chlapaty Recreation and Wellness Center, an 87,000 square foot facility opened in the fall of 2008 includes: a 6,900 square foot, 2-level fitness center including areas for cardiovascular workout and free weights/machines; a 16 foot-wide concourse running the length of the facility, overlooking the track and courts; home, visitor, officials and faculty/staff locker rooms; a juice bar/lounge area.
The University of Dubuque is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, 230 South LaSalle Street, Suite 7-500, Chicago, Illinois, 60604 and the State of Iowa Department of Education. Specific programs are accredited by the State of Iowa Department of Education, the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, and the Aviation Accreditation Board International. The University holds institutional membership with the Association of Independent Liberal Arts Colleges for Teacher Education and the Iowa Association of Colleges for Teacher Education.
