Southern Utah University

Located in the world’s best backyard, SUU is the University of the Parks thanks to its close proximity to several outdoor recreational areas and its educational partnerships with the National Park Service. SUU’s safe, residential campus allows students (over 9,000) to create lifelong friendships along with once-in-a-lifetime outdoor adventures in conjunction with innovative academic endeavors.

About

History

In the spring of 1897, Cedar City was notified it had been chosen as the site for the Branch Normal School, the region’s first teaching training school in southern Utah. For the next three months, citizens labored to complete Ward Hall on Main Street for the first school year. In September, the school opened its doors.

Education

Southern Utah University is a caring campus community where students come to explore their interests and prepare for meaningful careers and life experiences. With more than 140 undergraduate and 19 graduate programs across six academic colleges, SUU proudly offers world-class, project-based learning opportunities where students gain professional experience before entering the job market.

Research

The Office of Institutional Research & Assessment supports SUU’s mission fulfillment by providing data and data analysis to inform institutional and programmatic planning, decision-making, and assessment. In addition to meeting internal data needs, the Office of IR & Assessment also represents SUU to external stakeholders by responding to report and data requests from state, federal, and other external agencies. Our office coordinates and collaborates with other entities on campus to ensure data integrity.

Services

Student services

The Student Involvement and Leadership Office is dedicated to giving students the best college experience possible. With all the activities offered, there is definitely something for everyone here at SUU. Whether you want to be super involved, or are just looking for something to do Friday night, you'll find you belong in Student Involvement and Leadership.

Housing services

  • At this time, on-campus housing is FULL. Many students at SUU live off-campus.
  • We have a Google Spreadsheet that is being updated at least daily to reflect housing options available in the community.

Library services

The Gerald R. Sherratt Library offers library media online programs accessible to students from any location. Though the majority of students in the LM program are seeking Library Media Endorsement to become school librarians, we also have students seeking a Library Media minor or who take LM courses secondary to a general interest in librarianship or for transfer credit to other library programs.

Medical services

Southern Utah University does not offer student health insurance or maintain a Health Clinic on-campus, however, there are a number of healthcare options nearby. Whether you are looking for a new health care provider, need to find some insurance, or just need to find a place to fill a prescription the information below can help you.

Student Life

Campus life

Southern Utah University’s campus offers a serene and peaceful backdrop to purposeful study and academic exploration. The 130-acre, tree-covered landscape is punctuated by an architectural blend of modern and historic buildings, 1.3 acres of flower beds, and a public art display that weaves campus together in story and metaphor. A safe, residential campus allows students to create lifelong friendships in conjunction with their academic endeavors.

Sports facilities

With the move, SUU discontinued its baseball program and established a men's tennis team in its place. The most decorated program both athletically and academically is the prestigious "Bowerman Award" winning Cross Country and Track & Field programs at SUU. The SUU Gymnastic team competes within the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) and in 2013 received a total of six academic all-WAC citations in 2013 with the list including two seniors and four sophomores. The group was made up of seniors Caitlin Kennedy and Michaela Chernoch and the four sophomores included Jamie Armijo, Rochelle Bernier, Ana Jaworski and Brittney Jensen.

Student clubs

Most student organizations at SUU are officially recognized and provided with assistance by the SUU Student Association (SUUSA). SUUSA is the leading student organization and provides activities throughout the school year for students. Activities range from comedians, concerts, carnivals, outdoor movies and dances. SUUSA is governed by four executive council members, elected each March, along with one representative per college in the Student Senate, by the general student body. Event Directors, members of the President's Cabinet, and Club Directors are appointed by the Executive Council through an application and interview process.

Accreditation

The university is a fully accredited member of the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.
