Overview

The Dance program at Southern Utah University is accredited by the National Association of School of Dance (NASD) and offers a diverse curriculum of classes and laboratory experiences for dance majors.

Labs are offered in studio, stage, and production to give student dancers opportunities to choreograph, design, direct and perform. The SUU dance department employs both nationally- and internationally-renowned faculty members who are dedicated to sharing their skills and experiences for preparing students for future careers. Instructors are deeply focused and offer a personalized approach to education.

The purpose is to foster academic and artistic excellence in a nurturing and challenging educational environment. Within a liberal arts and science tradition, the dance experience at SUU engages students in a rich diversity of experiences aimed to cultivate their aesthetic, creative, and scholarly potential. Central to our purposed is superior teaching and personalized mentorship that empowers and transforms the learner to be a dynamic individual.

Intended Outcomes/Objectives for Bachelor of Arts & Bachelor of Science Degrees in Dance

A successful student will:

  • Have a working knowledge of how principles of composition are used as tools for choreography.
  • Understand basic production processes (i.e. performing, dancing, choreographing, and technical production).
  • Have a working knowledge of the historical development of dance as an art form.
  • Examine perspectives of critical analysis of the artistic process and aesthetics.
  • Have a working knowledge of human movement and anatomy.
  • Demonstrate advanced proficiency in modern dance or ballet and an intermediate level in modern dance or ballet.

  • Application - pay required $60 application fee (U.S. currency only), $35 for returning students.
  • English Proficiency - Proof of English proficiency is required for all applicants whose first language is not English
  • Transcripts - Official transcripts (record of courses taken and grades received) from each high school, college, and university attended must be submitted.
  • Passport - Please provide a copy of the photo page of your passport.
  • Finances - International students are required to demonstrate that funds are available for the first year of study.
