About

History

Gettysburg College was founded in 1832, as a sister institution for the Lutheran Theological Seminary. Both owe their inception to Thaddeus Stevens, a Radical Republican and abolitionist from Gettysburg. The college's original name was Pennsylvania College; it was founded by Samuel Simon Schmucker.

Education

Gettysburg College is a residential, undergraduate college of the liberal arts and sciences that prepares students from across the nation and around the globe to pursue lives of personal and professional fulfillment and to engage the complex questions of our time through effective leadership and socially responsible citizenship.

Research

Masters Hall is home to the physics department, and houses several specialized labs, the largest classroom on campus (Mara Auditorium), a machine shop, and a Physics student lounge. In addition, the building also includes an indoor planetarium, Hatter Planetarium which gives students glimpses of what the night sky will look like each month. It also has private shows for classes and performances on different, special topics. Housing services

Gettysburg is a residential liberal arts college, with 90 percent of students living on campus. As a first-year student you will live in one of the two first-year quads, each offering personal space, group lounges and seminar rooms, and amenities including a Microfridge, cable TV, and high-speed internet.

First-year students are assigned to residence halls based on their First-Year Seminar or College Writing course.

Library services

Musselman Library provides access to books, journals, videos, sound recordings, rare books, and manuscripts, many in online format. The online catalog, is freely available and provides a description of the books, DVDs, and CDs in the collection. The journal locator provides a list of online and print journals in the collection. A list of the online databases is available on the library's website. 

Medical services

Gettysburg College Health Services offers a wide range of primary care treatment services and referrals to help students maintain good physical and emotional health.

Student Life

Campus life

Gettysburg is a residential liberal arts college, with 90 percent of students living on campus. As a first-year student you will live in one of the two first-year quads, each offering personal space, group lounges and seminar rooms, and amenities including a Microfridge, cable TV, and high-speed internet.

First-year students are assigned to residence halls based on their First-Year Seminar or College Writing course.

An online housing lottery system, based on class year and grade point average, will determine your housing options as a sophomore, junior, and senior. Options include apartments, suites, singles, and theme houses.

Sports facilities

The center features:

  • A natatorium, complete with eight lanes, four warm-up lanes, and enough space for 350 seated spectators
  • A 10,000 foot weight and cardio room complete with flat-screen TVs
  • Additional spaces for yoga, aerobics, spinning and martial arts classes
  • An upgraded training room with a Hydroworx pool
  • Rock climbing walls
  • A student lounge and dining space called "The Dive"

Student clubs

With more than 120 clubs and organizations on campus, Gettysburg students find it easy to get involved in almost anything.

Clubs and organizations run the gamut, from student government and campus publications to sports, the arts, community service, and outdoor adventure. All are run by students, and they create more than a thousand leadership opportunities.
