We offer a major in Classical Studies and minors in Classical Studies, Greek, and Latin. The Classics major at Gettysburg College may include the study of Greek or Latin, depending on a student’s interests.

Learning Outcomes

Students will:

understand the cultures, societies, and history of the ancient Mediterranean world through different kinds of evidence.

articulate the continuing influence of that world in the modern era.

use their knowledge of the ancient Mediterranean world to address questions in other disciplines, and use methods and inquiries from other disciplines in their interpretation of the ancient Mediterranean world.

learn the fundamentals of ancient Greek or Latin and be able to read a significant quantity of authentic ancient prose and poetic texts, and use appropriate scholarly tools for the analysis of these texts.
