History
Founded in 1846 as the Leeds Government School of Art and Design, Leeds Arts University has contributed significantly to the development of arts education in Britain and across the world. The University boasts Henry Moore, Damien Hirst and Barbara Hepworth amongst its alumni.
In 2017 the College gained University title, becoming the only specialist arts university in the North of England.
Education
There’s a real-life feel to studying with us. We offer you the chance to take part in live briefs, performances, competitions, and work experience as relevant, as well as developing entrepreneurial and professional skills.
You’ll be immersed in an inspiring atmosphere and will have opportunities to collaborate with others whose specialism lies outside of your own - from filmmakers to fashion designers, photographers to musicians, artists to designers; anything feels possible here.
All our undergraduate BA (Hons) and BMus (Hons) degrees are three years long, and include the option to take an additional placement year to build your experience in the creative industries.
Research
Leeds Arts University provides a space where researchers can develop innovative and creative lines of enquiry. Research-informed teaching inspires student achievement across our curricula. Our researchers contribute to the cultural landscape locally, nationally and internationally.
In order to meet our research goals, the University has developed a supportive infrastructure. Currently, we employ two Research Fellows to engage in their own practice and to mentor others. In addition, we have a large pool of academic staff who pursue their own research interests.
Our researchers specialise in many diverse fields; from surrealism to social practice and widening participation.

Our Careers Guidance team are always on hand to help you gain skills and provide support or advice when looking or applying for a job.
Whether looking for a part-time job whilst they study or full-time employment once they graduate, thanks to close ties with the industry, we advertise loads of great opportunities in the region and further afield on our job board.
The professional modules on your course give you the opportunity to research the creative industries and identify companies you’d like to approach. Employers also regularly approach the University to see if we have any students suitable to be placed with them.
Students also enjoy five years of career support once they graduate.

Student services
At Leeds Arts University our student support teams provide a friendly and inclusive approach to support you with your journey through university.
Our Student Advice and Wellbeing team provide inclusive support such as financial, mental health, chaplaincy support and more for our student community.
Our Academic Support team provides a hub of support for students with learning differences, conditions and disabilities. The university has a diverse mix of creative students with a variety of learning styles and differences which enriches the learning environment.
The University offers a range of support for Care experienced students, throughout the application process, transition and journey through higher education.
Housing services
The University works with two accommodation providers to reserve rooms for students studying at Leeds Arts University. Both Car Mills and The Leatherworks are well located, just a short walk from our Blenheim Walk campus, and offer a choice over cost and facilities.
Carr Mills is a modern student development offering rooms in 5, 6 and 7 bedroom flats, located just 15 minutes' walk from the University and a short bus journey into Leeds city centre. The majority of the rooms are en-suite.
The Leather Works offers a wide range of amenities designed to enhance the student experience. Located just a short bus ride into the centre of Leeds, and a 20-minute walk from Leeds Arts University.
Library services
Our specialist art library holds an impressive collection of creative arts and design books and media. It also has resources on contextualising subjects like cultural studies, politics, psychology and sociology to support students’ wide-ranging curiosity.
The library also provides access to academic journals, eBooks, industry-grade insights and online databases with abundant visual content.
ICT services
Students also have access to computer suites with networks of Apple Mac computers featuring regularly updated, industry-standard software for a wide range of creative applications.
We have a friendly IT helpdesk that can provide help for computer queries, and expert technicians to help students get to drips with software and technology, such as drawing tablets and the Adobe Creative Suite.
Medical services
The nearest GP practice for students is Leeds Student Medical Practice, and the nearest hospital is Leeds General Infirmary, both are less than 10 minutes walk from campus.
The nearest sexual health clinic is The Centre for Sexual Health, which is 10 minutes walk away from campus, and the nearest NHS dentist for students is New Smile Dental Care which is 5 minutes walk from campus.
Campus life
Higher Education students are based at our Blenheim Walk campus, just a short walk from the city centre in the heart of the university district.
Students have access to industry-standard workshops and equipment relevant to their course area, including printmaking, digital print, ceramics and glass, wood, metals and plastics, 3D printers, photographic lighting studios, filmmaking studios, analogue/digital recording studios and an auditorium.
Students also have access to computer suites with networks of Apple Mac computers featuring regularly updated, industry-standard software for a wide range of creative applications and a specialist arts library.
Sports facilities
Leeds Arts Union offers a range of fitness and sporting activities: a netball and football team which compete in local leagues, a twice weekly calendar of fitness classes including yoga and Pilates and a weekly running club.
Student clubs
The Students’ Union host a variety of events to enhance the student experience, hosting a variety of societies, many of which provide additional cultural and arts opportunities.
Students are given an opportunity to sell their work at themed art markets, to perform at events including the annual Winter Party, to provide event photography, to promote events and to participate in public exhibitions both in the University and in external venues.
We have annual graduate shows where the whole University becomes an open events space/gallery to celebrate students’ work across all creative disciplines including a fashion catwalk show; film showcase; music performances and poetry readings.

My Leeds Study experience through Study Portal.
Applying for grad schools through Study Portal was the best decision I ever made. The process was so easy and very satisfying, the system takes your details and helps you find the best universities that suits your personal preferences. My best part is where there is a skill match platform, informing you ahead of time whether you are a best fit for a particular school so as not to waste your time. That, I think is a plus, I wish every other system was this unique and easy. Study Portal is simply, life made easy for all applicants and school applications. I truly love it here and I do recommend it for all undergrads, post grads and PHD students.
