The political science department has strong commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and service. The department’s faculty members are active researchers who publish widely in the discipline. In addition, several faculty members have received awards for teaching and service.

Overview

The bachelor’s degree in political science provides students with a strong foundation to pursue careers in many different fields, including public policy analysis, public service, teaching, research, and the legal profession. As one step in enhancing the professional development of our undergraduate students, the department provides a variety of resources and opportunities, including pre-law advising and internship programs. Students also have opportunities to work with faculty on research projects. In recent years, our undergraduates have participated in national policy conferences, and they've worked in a number of internships in the public and private sectors. In addition, recent graduates have been admitted to highly selective graduate programs.

Learning Objectives

  • To enhance a student’s ability to communicate in both written and oral form;
  • To enhance a student’s ability to think through and compare competing theories and information utilizing logical and analytical means;
  • To be knowledgeable in the six subfields of the discipline including major trends, debates, theories, and methods; and
  • To be prepared for graduate study in political science or a related discipline such as law.

Programme Structure

The department seeks to instill in its students a variety of skills and levels of knowledge that will serve them regardless of the profession they ultimately choose. Students seeking the B.A. degree take courses in several different subfields, including American Politics, Comparative Politics, International Relations, Political Theory, Public Law, and Public Policy. The department also provides majors with opportunities for internships, for credit, in the legal profession, political campaigns, legislative offices, and in public administration.

Freshman applicants are admissible with either a 3.0 core GPA (calculated based on English, math, social science, and natural science) from the high school transcript, a 1120 SAT score, a 22 ACT composite score, or a Nevada Advanced High School Diploma.
