Overview
Our BA in Politics from Cardiff University allows you to explore how political institutions and actors function (or fail to), and to evaluate ideas such as power, freedom, democracy, conflict, legitimacy and accountability. A key feature of our programme is the ability to explore a wide and varied range of topics, giving you both a robust foundational understanding and the opportunity to explore areas of interest to you and your future career.
Key facts
Politics plays a significant part in how we live and organise our lives. In an interconnected and globalised world, the impact of political decision-making and practice can be felt beyond borders. There couldn’t be a better time in which to develop your understanding of politics and the political arena. These include the nature of political thought, comparative governance, populism, elections and public opinion, the government and politics of the UK, US and the EU, the politics of justice, public policy, and modern Welsh politics. You’ll also have the opportunity to choose from some of our international relations modules. One distinctive benefit of studying Politics in Cardiff is that you get to share the benefit of the department’s extensive links to the Senedd Cymru/Welsh Parliament. We also have strong ties to Westminster through participation in the Parliamentary Studies scheme, which provides the opportunity to study a module co-taught by officials from the Houses of Parliament.
In addition, you’ll have the chance to work on an extended research project, which could involve a dissertation or a simulation-based group project. There will also be the opportunity to engage in community politics, which, for example, could involve you being part of projects designed to encourage young people to participate in the democratic process.
You’ll graduate with an excellent understanding of politics, policy and government and having gained the intellectual and communications skills that will be of value whether you work in government, the civil service, political journalism, or in the private or voluntary sectors. Politics graduates find careers in a wide range of fields and varied job roles.
