Overview

The theatre education curriculum balances rigorous theatre coursework (including acting, script analysis, stagecraft, costume techniques, and theatrical history) with professional education requirements.

Undergraduates learn how to direct youth productions, manage stage spaces, facilitate creative drama activities, and teach technical theatre skills to secondary students.

Professional education courses cover adolescent development, reading in the content areas, and methods of teaching theatre arts.

Graduates are prepared to transition directly into public, private, and charter school systems as certified theatre educators, drama teachers, and high school stage directors. Beyond the traditional secondary classroom, alumni serve as education directors at regional theatre companies, drama instructors for community arts organizations, youth theatre workshop leaders, and stage managers. The program's combination of performance skills, technical training, and educational leadership also provides strong preparation for graduate study in drama education, directing, or educational leadership.

Key facts

Students will not be required to complete the Secondary Education Certification to finish their degree. If they choose not to pursue Certification, the 9 credit hours of teaching-specific training will prepare graduates for in-demand opportunities as teaching artists, housed at nearly every professional theatre company within the US, especially here in the DMV.

The Theatre - Theatre Education course offered at University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) combined with Secondary Education Certification totals 120 credits, an achievable goal for four year or two-year transfer study.
