Overview

Visual Arts - Animation students at University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) begin with foundational visual arts training in drawing, two- and three-dimensional design, and visual concepts before progressing into specialized digital animation pipelines. The curriculum spans 2D vector and frame-by-frame animation, 3D modeling and texturing, character animation, digital lighting and shading, motion graphics, and sound design for moving images. B.F.A. candidates complete an expanded studio sequence centered on narrative development, visual storytelling, and cinematic principles. The concentration culminates in a year-long senior capstone sequence where students conceptualize, animate, and post-produce a fully realized thesis film or interactive portfolio to present at the annual department exhibition.

UMBC's Animation graduates are prepared to transition into dynamic creative careers across feature film animation, television production, video game development, advertising, visual effects (VFX), and interactive media studio environments. Typical job titles include 2D/3D animator, character rigger, 3D modeler, storyboard artist, concept artist, motion graphics designer, lighting artist, and visual effects specialist. The major also provides a solid artistic and technical foundation for graduate study toward a Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) in animation, digital arts, visual effects, or game design.

Key facts
