English with Secondary Licensure from Eastern New Mexico University has a reputable record regarding student success in the English field, including placing students in first-rate graduate programs and in preparing students for careers in teaching.
Quick Facts:
- Students specifically interested in teaching English at the secondary level can major in English with Secondary Licensure at Eastern New Mexico University. An English major's time frame for degree completion varies with the individual student, but can be attained in four years.
- Students interested in this degree can choose two paths: a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Art. The BA degree requires two years of a language. Studying another language improves students' understanding of grammar; thus we strongly encourage the Bachelor of Arts.
- With a degree in English with Secondary Licensure, students' primary job opportunity is teaching English at the high school or junior high level. In addition to completing the degree, students must pass state competency exams to teach in public schools.
- A degree in English does not just prepare students for a teaching career, however. Studies show that English majors are also consistently hired for a variety of jobs that require persuasive and clear communication skills including, but not limited to: attorneys, managerial and administrative positions, FBI trainers, newscasters, politicians, textbook sales representatives, columnists, journalists, and translators. In addition to advisors within the department, Career Services offers job placement assistance to all students.
