Overview

During the Italian programme from New York University students master the language and obtain a thorough understanding of Italian history, culture and society. Courses range from Dante to contemporary cinema and society; from women writers of the Renaissance to futurist performance art.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of programme requirements, students are expected to have developed:

Written and oral competence that will enable them to use Italian to communicate with Italian speakers worldwide.

A broad knowledge of Italian trans-national history, culture, and literary traditions, with a focus on how Italian culture has spread globally.

The ability to study textual and cultural objects by acquiring skills in close reading and in analysis of both textual and audio-visual sources (including music and film).

The ability to situate cultural phenomena within their historical context.

Skills in conducting research in the field of Italian Studies, including the ability to use library and archival resources, digital tools, and new technologies.

The ability to approach the field of Italian Studies through an interdisciplinary perspective while working across various media.

Standardized test scores (see NYU’s standardized testing requirements). Standardized testing is optional for the upcoming application term.

A Self Reported Academic Record (SRAR). All applicants will be invited to complete this after submitting their application.

English language testing if you have not completed at least 3 years of study where English is the sole language of instruction at the time of application submission and English is not your first language.

Records of all college work that you have received academic credit for and does not appear on your high school transcript.

The Common Application Mid Year Report with updated academic record if mid-year grades are available. This should show your first semester senior year grades.
