Overview

The International Relations programme from New York University combines a foundation of core courses in politics, economics and statistics with a suite of advanced classes on international relations and political economy, elective courses focused on a particular region, for a total of 12 courses.

Key facts

Advanced study in a foreign language and a semester of study abroad are also required. IR courses are offered at many of NYU’s Study Away sites.

The analytical skills gained by IR majors prepare them for a wide range of careers. Our graduates accept positions with governments, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), think tanks, international finance groups, multinational corporations, law firms, and other institutions.

Many pursue further study in fields such as political science, law, and public and international affairs at highly competitive universities.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of programme requirements, students are expected to have acquired:

The ability to analyze both complex political issues and quantitative data.

Knowledge of the fundamental theoretical debates in the field of international relations.

Advanced knowledge of a specialized topic in international relations, and the requisite skills for conducting sophisticated research on that topic.

Fluency in presenting well-grounded arguments, both orally and in writing.

General requirements

Standardized test scores (see NYU’s standardized testing requirements). Standardized testing is optional for the upcoming application term.

A Self Reported Academic Record (SRAR). All applicants will be invited to complete this after submitting their application.

English language testing if you have not completed at least 3 years of study where English is the sole language of instruction at the time of application submission and English is not your first language.

Records of all college work that you have received academic credit for and does not appear on your high school transcript.

The Common Application Mid Year Report with updated academic record if mid-year grades are available. This should show your first semester senior year grades.
