Overview

The Classical Studies program of University of Pennsylvania includes economic, political, social, and intellectual history as well as philosophy, archaeology, religion, and myth. Students may choose a track that emphasizes the study of texts in Greek and/or Latin or opt for a program of courses that do not require any knowledge of the ancient languages. The Classical Studies Department provides extensive training at the Undergraduate level and graduate training in both Classical Studies and Ancient History. We also offer a special Post-Baccalaureate Program for students who wish to continue the study of Greek and Latin but who do not yet meet the requirements of a conventional graduate program.

The Major in Classical Studies- Mediterranean Archaeology can take any one of three different tracks:

Track 1: Classical Languages and Literature caters to students for whom Latin and/or Greek are central to their coursework.

Track 2: Classical Civilizations is the most flexible track: it can accommodate many different combinations of courses, with no language requirement. At the same time, however, students are encouraged to pursue a concentration in one or more of the following specific areas: archaeology, history, intellectual culture, language, literature, reception.

Track 3: Mediterranean Archaeology centers on the content and methods of archaeology and material culture.
