History is offered by McNeese State University. The bachelor’s degree in history at McNeese immerses students in the study of past people, events, institutions and societies.

History majors learn to research, investigate, verify and interpret historical data and accounts, think critically about bias and grapple with differing points of view. While the history degree program at McNeese equips students to work in the historical field, it also serves as excellent preparation for many other careers. As a history major, you will develop the ability to analyze information, craft persuasive arguments and communicate effectively through written and oral presentations, all of which is excellent preparation for law school. History majors at McNeese have the opportunity to participate in internships at the Frazar Memorial Library archives or at local museums and galleries. A work-study program on campus also allows history majors to get hands-on experience teaching by tutoring their fellow university students in history. History majors are encouraged to join Phi Alpha Theta, an honor society that promotes the study of history by encouraging research, publication and the free exchange of ideas among historians, students and teachers. Students in Phi Alpha Theta have the chance to present academic research papers at the Louisiana Historical Association’s annual conference and may be eligible for scholarships and awards.
