In 1939, Louisiana opened the Lake Charles Junior College, a division of Louisiana State University and the forerunner of McNeese State University. The following year, the school changed its name to John McNeese Junior College to honor John McNeese, a renowned Southwest Louisiana educator and the first superintendent of schools in Imperial Calcasieu Parish.
McNeese is the first university in the State of Louisiana to offer a concentration in forensic chemistry. It is one of the first schools in the nation to offer a concentration in terrorism, preparedness and security.

The residential student experience is a great complement to academic achievement and career preparation. Rise Real Estate Company provides contracted management services to McNeese in directing day to day operations of housing and residence life on the campus.
The Office of Network Services provides technical and network support for University-owned equipment. Computers owned by students are not supported. Students needing assistance should contact the manufacturer of their device. Troubleshooting assistance is available to students for network connectivity issues on campus and in the dorms.
Health Services is located in the Watkins Infirmary on the McNeese campus. We provide acute care medical services to all enrolled McNeese students. Staff include registered nurses, and doctors maintain daily clinic hours on the premises.
Living on campus enriches the collegiate experience like nothing else. Residential life offers students quick access to campus resources and support services, a close-knit residential community and the convenience of all-inclusive housing amenities.
The cardiovascular theatre is an exercise entertainment system that enables each participant, using a regular set of headphones, to listen to any one of a multitude of different audiovisual components, television, radio, tape player, or CD player, while exercising on any piece of cardiovascular fitness equipment. This includes eight large televisions, eight CD and FM radio players for our students.
