The Law and Justice Studies Major is offered by Purchase College SUNY. The B.A. in Law and Justice Studies examines law’s political, historical economic and global dimensions from interdisciplinary perspectives with increased attention to the theoretical frameworks and institutional forces at play.

Students examine intersections between justice systems and social institutions, and gain better understanding of critical questions related to needed structural change. The curriculum approaches the study of law from an applied perspective to address the role of law in social policy and practice. Students choose from a range of legal studies courses taught by practicing lawyers, alongside relevant courses from across fields of inquiry. Coursework explores topical areas in law and the ways in which law mediates questions of authority and power, tensions between individual liberty social responsibility, and interpretations of justice, fairness, and equality. The program is designed to build substantive knowledge in various areas of interest, while developing skills and analysis, argumentation, research and writing.

Generally, successful freshman applicants have earned a GPA of 3.0 (or 85 on a 100 point scale).Purchase does not require scores from the SAT or ACT exam (with exceptions), though applicants are given the option to submit them. It is recommended that test scores be submitted only if it is believed to benefit the application. For applicants who are considering submitting scores, we typically prefer the following:
- SAT: 1170 total score; minimum Reading score of 24
- ACT: 24 Composite
Students who are required to submit test scores include:
- Applicants who are homeschooled
- International students, who will need to provide a TOEFL score
- Applicants who attended secondary schools that provide only narrative evaluations rather than some form of grading scale
