The Journalism Major is offered by Purchase College SUNY. In an increasingly complicated world, where the very idea of objective truth is being challenged, it falls to journalists to dig, untangle, and tell us what’s going on … before the facts are brushed away.

Key Facts

As a journalism major, you’ll learn how to gather, assess, and disseminate information and ideas. You’ll be challenged to find new ways of thinking, and new ways of approaching problems. Armed with an ability to critically evaluate and clearly communicate, graduates will not only be able to define issues and ideas to others, but will look at everything through a new lens themselves. Purchase students produce journalism in a variety of computer labs using equipment consistent with industry standards. Journalism majors work in a dedicated suite in the Humanities Building that offers an integrated newsroom, broadcast studio, and control room with up-to-the-minute technology. Our proximity to New York City, the media capital of the world, has enabled students to land internships with such varied media outlets as NBC, CBS, ABC, PBS, MSG, Marie Claire, and the Daily News. In essence, we strive to offer our students whatever they need to produce and promote excellent work. Chief among these things is a core set of journalistic practices and principles that remain steady even as the technology changes.

Generally, successful freshman applicants have earned a GPA of 3.0 (or 85 on a 100 point scale).Purchase does not require scores from the SAT or ACT exam (with exceptions), though applicants are given the option to submit them. It is recommended that test scores be submitted only if it is believed to benefit the application. For applicants who are considering submitting scores, we typically prefer the following:

SAT: 1170 total score; minimum Reading score of 24
ACT: 24 Composite
