Classical Studies examine ancient Greek and Roman cultures— their languages, literature, history, religion, art, and philosophy. The Latin Teaching major from Brigham Young University offers essential knowledge of philology, ancient history, archaeology, biblical studies, and the literary tradition of Western Europe, as well as traditional grounding in the Classics.

Students acquire important foreign-language study skills that include careful reading, thoughtful writing, and persuasive speaking. Latin is the mother language not only of Italian, French, and Spanish, but in a real sense of English as well. Its study will especially enhance one’s understanding of English vocabulary, grammar, and rhetorical structure.

Career

Majors in Latin Teaching cultivate skills in literary analysis, careful reading, and grammatical precision as well as pedagogical skills that prepare them for teaching positions in Latin/language arts at both the middle and high school level. Bolstered with a minor or teaching minor in another field, the rigor of the Latin teaching major sets job applicants apart in positive ways from their peers.

Graduates of this program, combining with classroom teaching experience, become positioned to work as curriculum specialists and teacher coaches at the school or district level. Many also pursue advanced degrees that allow them to teach concurrent enrolment courses as well as work in higher education, k-12 administration, or library science.
