History stands at the heart of a liberal arts bridge between the humanities and social sciences. Historical understanding is thus basic to the life of an educated human being. As such, History Teaching at Brigham Young University is the ideal major for the student who wants the broad educational background for entrance into professions such as law, government service, or business, or who wants a liberal arts education. History can also be valuable training for someone who plans to teach.

Candidates can describe how young people learn and develop acknowledging individual and cultural differences in order to create environments that motivate collaborative learning. Candidates also use a variety of instructional strategies to encourage students' development of critical thinking problem solving and performance skills and use assessments to inform instruction.

Career

The History Teaching program prepares students for education related careers. Those who meet all requirements graduate with a Utah teaching license that is recognized provisionally by most other states. History Teaching majors are certified to teach history, political science, and financial literacy courses in Utah secondary schools. They are also prepared to work in curriculum development, as educational consultants in museums and at historic sites, and in other history education related careers.

All secondary education and college work done outside of the United States (not U.S. accredited) must be evaluated by an international credential evaluation agency at the applicant’s expense. This includes international work that may have been evaluated by a U.S. accredited institution and included on a U.S. accredited high school or university transcript.

Reporting US High School Work – If you have attended any U.S. high schools, or U.S. accredited high schools, you will need to self-report this work on the application.

Endorsements – An endorsement must be submitted from your ecclesiastical leaders on your behalf. If you are not a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints you must be interviewed by either your own ecclesiastical leader or a Latter-day Saint bishop as well as the University Chaplain.
