Overview

Students of German Teaching language and literature from Brigham Young University develop fluency in another language as well as sensitivity to their own language and cultural heritage, to the contributions and diversity of other peoples, and to the advantages of an international perspective.

Students will communicate effectively in speech and writing about topics related to the culture literature and linguistics of German-speaking countries. Their presentations and writing will demonstrate careful analysis critical thinking coherent argumentation and the ability to connect their ideas to those of relevant scholars and thinkers.

Career

Majors in German teaching cultivate proficiency and cultural knowledge as well as pedagogical skills that prepare them for teaching positions in German at both the middle and high school level. When combined with classroom teaching experience, graduates of this program are also positioned to work as curriculum specialists and teacher coaches at the school or district level. Many also pursue advanced degrees that allow them to teach concurrent enrolment courses as well as work in higher education and K-12 administration.

Beyond traditional teaching careers, graduates from this program develop skills that they can apply in education technology, distance learning, corporate training, and curriculum design.

All secondary education and college work done outside of the United States (not U.S. accredited) must be evaluated by an international credential evaluation agency at the applicant’s expense. This includes international work that may have been evaluated by a U.S. accredited institution and included on a U.S. accredited high school or university transcript.

Reporting US High School Work – If you have attended any U.S. high schools, or U.S. accredited high schools, you will need to self-report this work on the application.

Endorsements – An endorsement must be submitted from your ecclesiastical leaders on your behalf. If you are not a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints you must be interviewed by either your own ecclesiastical leader or a Latter-day Saint bishop as well as the University Chaplain.
