Overview

The Sociology programme at Brown University also allows students to pursue the Engaged Scholars Program (ESP). ESP is for students with an interest in making deeper connections between their concentration and long-term community-engaged activities such as internships, public service, and many other possible forms of community involvement.

Students develop that focus through their coursework, taking courses in diverse areas such as social inequality, family and gender, organizations, environmental sociology, race and ethnicity and globalization. Students refine their interests during the senior seminar and through their completion of a senior thesis or capstone project.

Student Goals:

Apply sociological theories, concepts, and research techniques to real-world problems
Learn to calculate, interpret, and communicate data and statistics
Develop analytical knowledge of major social and political issues
Construct an individualized program of study
Conduct a capstone project in their senior year

We strongly encourage applicants to submit a scanned image of the transcript at the time of application, which can speed processing; however, a final, official transcript will be required of all admitted students who matriculate. Applicants who have attended international institutions must submit transcripts or certified attestations of study, with certified English translations.

Three letters of recommendation by persons well qualified to speak from first-hand knowledge about the applicant's potential for graduate study. All letters should comment on an applicant’s ability to do research and perform in the program’s required coursework.
