- The relationship between the reader, the literary work, and the writer
- How to integrate reading, writing, English, and history in the classroom
- Approaches, theories, and practical strategies for teaching middle and high school students
- English and literature core content, specialized pedagogical core, and liberal arts core curriculum
Career opportunities
This Teaching English, Grades 7-12, Initial Certification BSc program from New York University leads to eligibility for New York State initial teaching certification, as well as permitting you to teach English in grades 5 and 6. You will graduate ready to take on roles in:
- Secondary school English education, grades 7–12
- Editing and publishing
- Journalism
- Corporate communications and technical writing
Recent graduates have obtained positions at New York City schools including Quest to Learn, Essex Street Academy, and Salk School of Science; in children's television at CBS; and as editors at publishing houses. Many graduates also pursue master's or doctoral degrees in English education and related fields.
