Overview

The Department of Theatre at UMBC provides an intensive, interdisciplinary BFA in Acting . Students train in world-class spaces, including a 250-seat Proscenium Theatre, a flexible 125-seat Black Box Theatre, computer-aided design labs, and specialized production shops. Through direct partnerships with prominent regional companies, students gain invaluable hands-on experience, participate in professional masterclasses, and build strong industry networks. Acting majors focus on voice, movement, characterization, and audition preparation.

Supported by award-winning faculty, visiting guest artists, and dedicated research grants, students receive the resources and guidance necessary to thrive in the global performing arts landscape.

Graduates are able to transition directly into careers across live performance, media, technical production, and arts leadership. UMBC theatre alumni work nationwide as actors, scenic designers, technical directors, and lighting consultants at venues ranging from regional equity theaters to major entertainment hubs. For those pursuing advanced degrees, graduates secure admission to top-tier MFA programs.

If you have or are currently earning your high school/secondary school diploma or equivalent but have not earned college credits at the university level AFTER earning your diploma, you should apply to UMBC as a first-year student.

We weigh a number of factors in making admission decisions. In addition to grade point average and standardized test scores, the strength of your curriculum, class rank, and other achievements as well as your essay will be considered. We expect applicants to have completed a strong college preparatory program of study from an accredited high school/secondary school.

If you have attended a postsecondary institution, such as a college or university, outside the United States, submit course by course credentials evaluated through one of the following evaluation services.

Documents in languages other than English must be accompanied by a certified English translation.
