Overview
The Science and Mathematics Education programme at Western Kentucky University offers a comprehensive pathway for students aiming to become the next generation of STEM educators. This initiative provides a robust foundation in both pedagogical theory and subject-specific expertise to ensure graduates are prepared for the classroom.
This course is delivered through a distinctive partnership between the College of Education and Behavioural Sciences and the Ogden College of Science and Engineering. By integrating these disciplines, the university ensures that students develop a deep understanding of their chosen scientific or mathematical field alongside modern teaching strategies.
The curriculum is modelled after the renowned UTeach Institute, focusing on inquiry-based learning and early field experiences.
Why Science and Mathematics Education at Western Kentucky University?
One of the primary advantages of this programme is the direct mentorship provided by Master Teachers. These individuals are experienced former secondary school STEM educators who offer personal guidance and professional insights throughout the duration of the course.
Students gain significant practical experience, starting with early teaching opportunities at middle and high school levels. This culminates in a dedicated student teaching placement during the final year, allowing for the application of theoretical knowledge in real-world Kentucky school districts.
The programme is a proud member of the UTeach STEM Educators Association and was established with support from the National Math and Science Foundation. These partnerships reflect the high standards of training and the institutional commitment to improving regional mathematics and science education.
Beyond the classroom, the university offers various professional resources and social support networks. Students may also access paid internships during the academic year or summer months, providing further opportunities to engage with the local educational community and enhance their professional profiles.
