Students earning the B.S. in Biology at Fairmont State University have the flexibility to select courses in one of the following areas:

Biology majors are not required to take a minor.

Some Fairmont State students choose the Biology program as their undergraduate major before going on to graduate school for dentistry, medicine, pharmacy and veterinary medicine.

The mission of the Biology Program is to provide a quality education for undergraduates in the biological sciences as well as providing an excellent preparation for a variety of careers, including those requiring advanced degrees.  The mission is accomplished by the Program’s commitment to high-quality classroom instruction and meaningful collaborations between students and faculty in their performance of original research.  Further support of the mission is obtained by the fostering of initiative and independence within the students thereby promoting lifelong learning while in the process of mastering the techniques and principles of biology.  The view that biology is a construct of reality resulting from scientific inquiry is encouraged.   Reflection and synthesis of biological concepts is encouraged to increase the students’ critical understanding of the discipline and thus advance their ability to apply its concepts.

General Requirements

  • Applicant must have completed a satisfactory program of secondary school studies equivalent to an American high school. 
  • An officially certified English translation of high school transcripts or college transcripts, if applicable, must accompany applications. 
  • In cases where high school graduation is expected after the application deadline for admission, acceptance at Fairmont State would be given to the prospective student with the understanding that the student successfully complete the necessary academic requirements and submit proof of graduation. Photo copies will not be accepted.
