Overview

Students can major or minor in the subject at University of Miami. In addition, the department sponsors two undergraduate philosophy organizations: the Philosophy Club, which is open to all UM undergraduates, and Phi Sigma Tau, a chapter of the National Honor Society in Philosophy. Both groups afford students regular opportunities to meet, eat, and talk philosophy with each other and with graduate students and faculty in the department.

All undergraduates who are interested in Philosophy - Pre-Med are welcome to participate in these philosophical events.

Mission

Philosophy majors should be able to think critically and imaginatively about philosophical questions and foundational issues in other disciplines. They should have a solid understanding of contemporary and historical philosophical texts; they should be able to evaluate complex philosophical arguments and to determine the logical validity or invalidity of arguments in any sphere.

Complete and submit the Common Application. Upon submitting, you will be asked to pay a $70 nonrefundable application fee.

If you have attended a secondary school outside of the United States, you must submit your official secondary school documents (transcripts, mark sheets, certificates, examination results, etc.)

We require you to submit two letters of recommendation: one from a high school guidance counselor and one from a teacher.

The University of Miami is need-aware for first-year international undergraduate applicants. This means that, for a portion of international applicants, the Admission Committee will consider that student’s ability to pay tuition without the need for financial aid.
