Overview

The English department prides itself on offering a wide variety of courses by a wide variety of professors with a wide variety of specialties. We teach courses in the principal periods of English and American literary history, courses in major English and American authors, in world literature, literary criticism, grammar and the history of the language, creative writing, genre, communications, and film. Also, members of the department offer courses to fulfill the requirements of the African American Studies Program, Gender Studies Program, and Nineteenth Century Studies Program.

English Language Requirements

    The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. General Requirements

  • Complete the  Common Application, including the Wofford College member page.
  • Submit the School Report form and your high school transcript(s).
  • Submit your official test scores.
  • The TOEFL (minimum score 90) or IELTS (minimum score 7) is required for all applicants whose native language is not English. If a minimum score is not met, a recorded or scored interview may be taken into consideration. We are happy to recommend  Initial View, ACTFL OPIc, and Vericant. 
  • The SAT or ACT is a requirement for native English speakers. SAT or ACT scores are expected from all international applicants unless students are unable to reach a testing center.Submit completed  Financial Certification for International Students.
