Overview
Objectives
Develop a high level of proficiency in comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. Take courses in all levels of Japanese as well as special-topics courses, including Business Japanese, Kanji, Anime/Manga and travel courses to Japan.
Spend at least one semester studying abroad at one of five universities in four cities — Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka and Saga — and practice language skills with a Japanese-speaking language assistant who lives on campus. Connect with Japanese exchange students at Pacific University Oregon.
Learning Outcomes | Japanese
After Pacific | Students who complete the Japanese program at Pacific University Oregon have an enhanced global awareness and people skills that allow them to thrive in a global community. Our students have participated in Fulbright Scholarships for international study, as well as the Japan Exchange Teaching (J.E.T.) program, serving as assistants to English teachers or coordinators for international relations. Many graduates work in international business.
Student Learning Outcomes
The Modern Languages major may concentrate in French, German, Japanese or Spanish as a primary language, and French, German, Japanese, Spanish or Chinese as a secondary language. Students may also select a major in Japanese or Spanish or a major in French or German Studies.
The department seeks to graduate majors who:
- demonstrate linguistic proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing equivalent to ACTFL Advanced Mid; communicate effectively on a wide variety of present, past, and future events; exchange general information on topics outside their fields of interest; and handle a complication or unexpected turn of events
- evaluate major literary, intellectual or historical trends of the cultures of concentration
- identify an interdisciplinary or disciplinary understanding of cultural diversity
- apply appropriate research methods to a senior thesis or a capstone project in the language of specialization

- Submit High School Transcript and Diploma. Transcripts from high school must be official with a certified translation in English. All college and/or university foreign transcripts must be sent to a credit evaluation company (WES or ECE are accepted). No exceptions to this policy.
