Overview
The Peace, Justice and Human Rights program from John Carroll University combines undergraduate research and study with experiential and service learning to help students gain a thorough understanding of peacebuilding and conflict resolution, social justice and human rights advocacy.
Consistent with Catholic social teaching that sees peace as inseparable from justice, and the extension of human rights as a fundamental ethical obligation, the PJHR Program also promotes political pluralism, cultural and religious diversity, ecological balance, and nonviolent conflict resolution. Its fundamental goal is to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and creativity to become advocates for justice and promote peace.
Career
PJHR students enter careers in public service, politics, non-profits, advocacy, law, international NGOs, and education. Four elements of the PJHR program will assist your professional discernment process and kickstart your search for the best jobs that fit your passion, skills, and goals:
The courses themselves will help students develop their critical and reflective thinking through writing, discussion, and presentation.
The professional development component (through Career Services) will provide a crash course on resume-building, LinkedIn profile, interviewing skills, career fair participation, and other professional development to make the transition after graduation.
Volunteer and internship opportunities, such as the summer Shepherd Intern program, gives students invaluable experience in the field.
PJHR 410 requires an internship (at least 105 hours) at an organization whose mission overlaps with PJHR’s learning goals. The capstone seminar gathers all PJHR students to reflect on their experiences.
