Overview
Your enhanced language skills will enable you to interact and work with people from other regions and cultures, to more confidently travel to Spanish-speaking countries, and provide you with important cultural insights and critical thinking skills.
The department invests in your success by providing individual support tailored to your career goals. You’ll take courses focused on a variety of occupations including marketing and communications, literature, film, television, media studies, cultural studies, and education among others.
Graduates have a myriad of opportunities at their fingertips to work with the public or specialize in translation or interpretation. Many students elect to pair a Spanish degree with another field to amplify their skills.
For example, those majoring in the sciences will be equipped to provide care to Spanish speakers without the need for a translator. Students interested in Political Science could pursue a law degree and specialize in immigration law.
Learning Outcomes
- All majors will acquire interpersonal proficiency in the target language reaching an Intermediate High Level (according ACTFL guidelines) in oral and listening proficiency.
- All majors will acquire presentational proficiency (according ACTFL guidelines) in the target language reaching an Intermediate High Level of oral and written proficiency.
- Students will be able to identify trends and characteristics of the literature of the countries represented.
- Students in will be able to identify diverse cultures where the target language is spoken.
- All majors will contribute in a meaningful way to the community through civic engagement.
- All majors will develop research skills and write a research monograph on a topic of interest related to their concentration
