About

Germany has the largest economy in Europe and the fifth largest in the world; if you have an interest in disciplines like art history, philosophy, literary theory, European history, or political theory knowing German is a must. The German program of Rutgers University is a wide-ranging program and will train you to think critically and write well.

Overview

Why German?

Course offerings include state of the art language instruction from beginning German to advanced proficiency, and an array of exciting topics in both German and English. Learn Business German or Translation. Take a class on “The Big Bang,” “The Cutting Edge,” or “Bargaining with the Devil.” Immerse yourself in “Enchanted Worlds,” “Animal Spirits,” "Tales of Horror," "Haunted Screen to Hyperreality," or Kafka. The FUBiS summer program offers terrific courses onsite in Germany; generous scholarship support is available. You can also study in Konstanz or at the Free University of Berlin for a semester or full academic year!

Interested in an internship, a job, a scholarship, graduate school, or study abroad? We pride ourselves in working closely with students. One-on-one faculty advising makes all the difference! Our students have gotten jobs at the United Nations and in industry, gone on to graduate schools including Harvard and Duke, and regularly win prestigious Fulbright scholarships and other awards that provide educational and work experience in Germany and Austria. Representatives from the German-American Chamber of Commerce come to campus each year to discuss internship opportunities.

Want to practice your German in an informal conversation group, watch a German movie, live in a German language dorm, or see a staging of Wagner’s Rheingold at the Metropolitan Opera? The Wessels Hall German Language & Culture Living-Learning Community offers great extracurricular activities! The German Club and the Delta Phi Alpha German Honors Society also organize a variety of events, including the ever-popular Oktoberfest and Fasching celebrations, and the Declamation Contest for area German students that the Honors Society co-hosts with the German Department each spring.
