Overview

Developing students with the ability to be competitive in the dynamic, and increasingly urban discipline of environmental planning and design requires a comprehensive strategic direction with strong philosophical underpinnings. Towards that end a conceptual framework has been developed.

The framework argues that today’s environmental issues cannot be addressed without an ethical foundation and an understanding of foundational ecological principles. In addition, it also identifies open space, green infrastructure and innovative agriculture as the unique space in which the programme is well positioned.

In short the Environmental Planning programme of Rutgers University strives to consider our dependence upon natural resources and the legacy of our use of the land, in an effort to foster ethical planning solutions to current critical issues.

The programme is rooted in the science and consistency of the four principles of ecology. The programme carves out a unique identity, one that promotes sustainability regardless of location, strives for social equity and envisions post-industrial landscapes with functional ecologies.

Programme Learning Goals

Understand, analyze, and incorporate natural features and systems in planning and land management practices.

Analyze and incorporate social, cultural, and behavioral factors in planning.

Understand the history of environmental planning and policy including contemporary and sustainable practices and their impact on people and the land.

Evaluate implications of institutions and policy in terms of their ability to shape sustainable regions.

Effectively communicate with the public, communities, and policymakers on issues of land stewardship, environmental justice, and social well-being.
