Overview

The students in the Film and Media Culture program at Middlebury College study film and a wide range of visual media, including television, digital games, online video, and video art, as aesthetic forms as well as in relation to the cultures that produced them.

Learning Goals

to expose students to a broad background in film and electronic media across historical eras and international borders
to teach students a disciplinary vocabulary and help develop the ability to analyze, interpret and evaluate the properties of film and media
to help students develop the research skills and methods, and deepen their theoretical background, as necessary to write and communicate about film and media from a range of academic perspectives
to foster an understanding of the relationship between film and media as sites of representation, and their creators, industries, audiences, and cultural contexts
to prepare students with the skills to create media works that are influenced by works they have studied, and that in turn shape their critical analytical abilities

Middlebury admissions requires an application essay. You’ll find possible essay prompts on the Common Application website. The Middlebury application does not require a supplemental essay.
Allow ample time for teachers to complete their recommendations online by the deadline.
Your counselor will complete the form online and return it to Middlebury with your 9th–11th grade transcripts.
If our nonrefundable $75 application fee presents a barrier for you, we encourage you to apply using a fee waiver.
Middlebury accepts a number of English proficiency tests for students whose first language is not English or whose secondary education has been at a school where English is not the primary language of instruction.
If you choose to submit standardized test scores, please request that testing services or your guidance department submit scores directly to Middlebury College.
You will be able to upload additional materials directly to your student portal.
