The History Department at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock values a skilled, critically aware and informed citizenry; an honest academic and public engagement with the past, its meanings, and its consequences for today; and the promotion and support of history and social studies education at K through 12, undergraduate, and graduate levels for students of all ages and of all backgrounds.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the Bachelor of Arts degree in history, graduates will:

  • Demonstrate a significant degree of knowledge about both American and World history through completion of a broad selection of courses in history.
  • Ask appropriate historical questions that demonstrate an understanding of the discipline of history and distinguish it from those of other disciplines.
  • Distinguish between primary sources and secondary sources used in the writing of history and know how to use and analyze each appropriately.

Programme Structure

  • Upper-level courses on topics ranging from the Alexander the Great to Arkansas History serve our History majors, but are also popular with students in all disciplines.
  • The major in History/Secondary Education leads to a B.A. and a license to teach Social Studies, grades 7-12, in Arkansas. It is an important focus of our efforts, and its students account for about a half of all history majors. We are proud of the fact that all the graduates have found jobs in teaching, museum education, or have gone on to graduate school.

    The TOEFL®PBT is administered in a paper format and measures your ability to use and understand English in a classroom setting at the college or university level. It accurately measures how well you can listen, read and write in English while performing academic tasks.

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 2.6

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 2.6 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

General Requirements

  • Application for admission and pay the $40 application fee. There’s no application fee for military students – request your waiver here.
  • Immunization records or Titer Test showing Immunity (for students born after 1956) can be sent via mail, emailed to admissions@ualr.edu, or faxed to 501-569-8956.
  • Official high school transcript Ask your counselor to send a current high school transcript. After you graduate, we will need a final high school transcript with your graduation posted.
  • Official college entrance exam scores Ask your counselor to send your scores along with your current high school transcript or request your scores through the exam provider.
  • Official college transcripts (If you have taken college classes while in high school) from all post-secondary schools you’ve attended.
