Overview

UMBC Dance Students build comprehensive movement mastery across modern contemporary dance, contemporary African dance techniques, and classical ballet. The curriculum moves beyond physical performance to examine dance history, music theory for movement, movement analysis, dance technology, and production skills.

The learning environment prioritizes creative collaboration and stage experience. Students work closely with active choreographers, guest artists, and scholars to refine their creative vision. Performance opportunities occur every semester, giving students frequent access to state-of-the-art stage facilities, lighting design, and technical theater operations. The program culminates in a senior capstone project where majors conceptualize, choreograph, and produce original creative works. Students can also pursue dual preparation for K-12 dance teacher certification in partnership with UMBC's Department of Education.

Graduates are prepared transition into careers across the performing arts, arts education, creative production, and movement science. Typical career paths include professional dancer, choreographer, dance instructor, arts administrator, event coordinator, and production manager. Alumni perform in regional and national dance companies, direct community arts organizations, or teach in public and private school systems. The curriculum also provides strong preparation for graduate study in Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) programs, dance therapy, or arts leadership.

The department offers a variety of approaches to performance and choreography and gives students opportunities to experience them through participation in choreography by faculty and visiting artists, and through independent study in choreography under a faculty mentor. If you have or are currently earning your high school/secondary school diploma or equivalent but have not earned college credits at the university level AFTER earning your diploma, you should apply to UMBC as a first-year student.

We weigh a number of factors in making admission decisions. In addition to grade point average and standardized test scores, the strength of your curriculum, class rank, and other achievements as well as your essay will be considered. We expect applicants to have completed a strong college preparatory program of study from an accredited high school/secondary school.

If you have attended a postsecondary institution, such as a college or university, outside the United States, submit course by course credentials evaluated through one of the following evaluation services.

Documents in languages other than English must be accompanied by a certified English translation.
