Overview

The Chemistry program at University of North Carolina Wilmington requires 400 hours of laboratory training above the 100 level, and courses taught by faculty who specialize in each of the five core disciplines: organic, inorganic, physical, analytical and biochemistry. 

Learning outcomes

A student who earns a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science Degree from the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of North Carolina Wilmington will:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental principles and concepts associated with each of the major branches of chemistry: Organic, Analytical, Physical, Inorganic and Biochemistry.
  • Demonstrate the ability to perform laboratory-based experiments, utilizing appropriate equipment, applying proper procedures and adhering to safety guidelines.
  • Demonstrate the ability to use modern library searching and retrieval methods to obtain information about a topic, chemical, chemical technique, or an issue relating to chemistry.
  • Communicate the results of scientific investigations both orally and in writing.
  • Participate effectively as a member of a group assigned to solve a chemical problem.

Academic Requirements

Required score: 2.5

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 2.5 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).
