Overview
The Psychology curriculum emphasizes quantitative and research methods and gives students a variety of opportunities for close faculty-student involvement in research projects. The holistic program prepares our majors for success in their graduate endeavors.
We also serve those students who are interested in psychology as part of a broader liberal arts program or to supplement another major interest. Since most careers involve interpersonal interactions and relationships with clients, superiors, subordinates and peers, the ability to understand behaviors is an integral tool for success in the workplace. Our students acquire the critical thinking, data analysis, and research methods skills invaluable to all who seek professional careers.
Mission
The University of Notre Dame is a Catholic academic community of higher learning, animated from its origins by the Congregation of Holy Cross. The University is dedicated to the pursuit and sharing of truth for its own sake. As a Catholic university, one of its distinctive goals is to provide a forum where, through free inquiry and open discussion, the various lines of Catholic thought may intersect with all the forms of knowledge found in the arts, sciences, professions, and every other area of human scholarship and creativity.
What can I do with a Psychology major?
Our graduates work in a wide variety of fields due largely to the skills they learn in studying psychology. These skills include, but are not limited to, the ability to critically evaluate and understand complex ideas and theories, data analytical skills, the capacity to be independent learners, and the ability to clearly, concisely, and effectively articulate their thoughts in both written and oral format. In addition, students benefit from gaining insight into and understanding why they (and others) think, feel, and behave as they do — insight that is invaluable in working and interacting effectively with people in all settings.
About a third of our graduates move directly to some form of graduate or professional program, another third enter the workforce directly in various disciplines and areas and the rest do a period of service before returning to graduate school or the workforce.
