Overview

This Elementary/Exceptional Student Education (ESE) with ESOL & Reading Endorsements major at University of Miami offers students the opportunity to earn two certifications and two endorsements – a combination that is rarely available in an undergraduate teacher-preparation program! The first of its kind in Florida, this program is designed for students interested in pursuing a career in teaching at the elementary level and/or in special education at the elementary or secondary level.

This major also leads to eligibility for endorsements in Reading and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), making our graduates well-qualified to meet the educational needs of diverse learners, and therefore highly sought-after for job opportunities upon graduation.

Mission

The mission of the University of Miami (UM) School of Education and Human Development is to prepare the next generation of leaders, researchers, and agents of change and well-being in education and the community. The Department of Teaching and Learning (TAL) is the unit that oversees all Teacher Preparation Programs at UM.

Complete and submit the Common Application. Upon submitting, you will be asked to pay a $70 nonrefundable application fee.

If you have attended a secondary school outside of the United States, you must submit your official secondary school documents (transcripts, mark sheets, certificates, examination results, etc.)

We require you to submit two letters of recommendation: one from a high school guidance counselor and one from a teacher.

The University of Miami is need-aware for first-year international undergraduate applicants. This means that, for a portion of international applicants, the Admission Committee will consider that student’s ability to pay tuition without the need for financial aid.
