Overview
For those students interested in the medical professions, the Department of Anthropology offers a combination of courses that apply the anthropological view to issues of health, health care, and wellness. The Medical Anthropology Track at University of Miami includes six advanced courses that address key concepts in global health and the skills necessary to investigate health and health care around the world. A degree in Anthropology with a Medical Anthropology track prepares students for careers in such fields as:
medical research, public health, nutrition, international health, disaster relief, genetic counseling, forensics, and epidemiology.
Educational Objectives
Students who graduate from our program in anthropology will have achieved:
- Basic familiarity with each of the four subfields of our discipline: archaeology, cultural anthropology, linguistic anthropology, and physical or biological anthropology.
- Extended familiarity with one or more of these subfields in terms of knowledge of content related to, for example, gender, food, primate behavior, art, ritual, museums and collections, the interaction of language and thought, material culture, the sounds of languages; and methodological skills involving field research in one or more of the subfields.
- The ability to articulate the anthropological view of the human condition in terms of an operational definition of culture and a holistic perspective on how humans behave.
- Sufficient skill in research to be able to produce a research paper based on original anthropological investigation.

General requirements
- Complete and submit the Common Application. Upon submitting, you will be asked to pay a $70 nonrefundable application fee.
- If you have attended a secondary school outside of the United States, you must submit your official secondary school documents (transcripts, mark sheets, certificates, examination results, etc.)
- We require you to submit two letters of recommendation: one from a high school guidance counselor and one from a teacher.
- The University of Miami is need-aware for first-year international undergraduate applicants. This means that, for a portion of international applicants, the Admission Committee will consider that student’s ability to pay tuition without the need for financial aid.
