Overview
Civil engineering is a diverse professional field with discipline specialties in structures, transportation, water supply and water pollution control, geotechnical engineering, hydrology, hydraulics and water resources, geomatics, ocean engineering, construction, and engineering planning and economics.
All CE students receive basic instruction in the various disciplines, with the option for additional elective courses in desired areas. The program is supported by highly qualified faculty and staff that maintain the programs and facilities at the highest level of quality.
The mission of the civil engineering program at Oregon State University is to provide a comprehensive, state-of-the-art education to prepare students for professional and responsible engineering positions with business, industry, consulting firms or government.
Student Outcomes for Civil Engineering Programs
The OSU Civil Engineering program prepares its graduates to achieve the Program Educational Objectives above several years into their careers. This is achieved by having students able to perform the following on graduation, well preparing them for active immediate and lifelong service in the profession:
- Ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering to solve engineering problems.
- Ability to design and conduct experiments as well as analyze and interpret data.
- Ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability and sustainability.
- Ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams.
- Ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems.
- Understanding of professional and ethical responsibility.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Broad education necessary to understand impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental and societal context.
- Recognition of need for and ability to engage in lifelong learning.
- Knowledge of contemporary issues.
- Ability to use techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.
- Knowledge of basic concepts in leadership.
- Ability to include non-engineering considerations, including business, regulatory and safety issues in problem-solving.
- Ability to incorporate effective negotiation or consensus-gaining in group decision-making.
- Knowledge and application of project planning and management practices and tools.
- Ability to assess imperfect or incomplete data conditions, risks and alternatives into problem-solving decisions.
- Exposure to current industry design practices, construction methods and materials, and overall project delivery considerations.

General requirements
- 3.0 GPA High school diploma or IB Diploma with minimum overall score of 26 or IGCSE 5 subjects with a 3.0 average using NCAA scale (9-7/A=4, 5-6/B/C=3, 4/D/E=2, F/G=1, 3-1/U=0). Subjects must include Math, English, Science, 2 electives.
- English Test Scores must be less than two years old as of the start term requested. Applicants may also use the following achievements to meet the English Requirements for admission to an undergraduate degree program.
- SAT: evidence-based reading/writing score of 560
- ACTE (ACT English) - 21
- Two English composition courses (Writing 121+) with grades C- or better or one English composition and one Speech Communication course (Communication 111+) with grades C- or better, all from a US university.
- IGCSE O or A Level English with a grade of C or better (provisional results not accepted)
- IB Diploma: Language A - Language and Literature (HL) with a minimum score of 5
- AP English L & C - minimum score of 3
